Welcome to the first installment of Fridays with Fuquéri, a biweekly blog cataloging the adventures my cohorts & I have had throughout the boroughs of New York City. Our inaugural edition takes Lil Manila & I over to The Red Pavilion, a cabaret club in Bushwick, Brooklyn.
First things first: House security is very strict with outside liquids & foods. Prepare to have your bags checked prior to entry and to have to dispose of anything of that sort even if it is sealed. (This includes bottles of water.)
Once past the security you will check in with the staff and be either seated at your table or allowed to join the general admission area. It is a smaller venue so it is recommended that you arrive as close to showtime as possible. They have two tops, four tops, booths and standing room by the bar. The tickets obtained from DoMore NYC are general admission but it's the same price as a round of drinks so it balances itself out.
Manila & I were able to get two spots up against the bar with a clear view of not only the stage but the floor performances as well. Their menu, designed by Orson Salcetti, is something special, with cocktails and mocktails alike. We tried both the Sesame Colada & Moon off the cocktails menu and they were delicious enough to call for seconds and thirds. Disclaimer: gratuity is included in your check.
Our Emcee (whose name, to my chagrin, eludes me) was an absolute delight and offered enlightening introductions for all of her colleagues. We were treated to seven acts by five different performers with each act being a stand-out of its own.
A tap-dancing strip-tease, a pair of lingerie clad gymnasts, a impromptu dance contest, and a wonderful lip-synced performance to Jennifer Hudson were just some of the acts we were treated to. Every performer had wonderful personality and kept the audience in the palm of their hands for the duration of their acts and ultimately the show.
The beauty of Lust Caution is that there is a rotating cast of characters and no two shows are ever the same. You never know who you're going to see and that brings an aura of mysticism and wonder to a already tantalizing celebration of cabaret.
All of the photos shown in this blog were taken during the last performance ,which took place on a gymnastics' ring in the center of the floor. It combined elements of shibari with interpretive dance with the fluidity and skill of trained gymnasts, a kinkier Circ Du Solei if you will. Their years of experience shone through during their act as they made defying gravity look easy.
It was certainly a night full of unforgettable experiences that I highly recommend. This is a one-of-a-kind show and make no bones about it: it is worth attending at least once. The entertainment value and ambiance far exceed the ticket price. 10/10, will definitely be going again.
Be sure to sign up for DoMore NYC below. For only $8 a month (that's less than Netflix) it's a hell of a deal and a great way to explore more of NYC's nightlife. You can attend approximately 4 shows a month with new choices being added daily.
